I recently received a question from a person that was somewhat biased. I chose to remove the public nature of my response however, only because it would have been inappropriate to call him/her out on the ethnocentricity. I’ve decided to make a second post about it now.

The goal of the anthropologist is to create a narrative that challenges what people think is “ordinary” or “normal,” and suggest that those methods of living might be “strange” and “abnormal.” (And vice versa) When you go about asking any question, give any opinion, answer with any certainty, FIRST ASK YOURSELF: “why do I believe that what I’m about to say is correct? Has my past influenced my opinion on this matter?”

Mass media is designed to sculpt our minds to think in a way that benefits only its own mechanics. I was asked what I think about other actors who turned to drugs or other methods of coping with their surroundings, and I responded like so: media and social life has told you to believe that you and the person with fame, are separated. The second you idolize a person or put down upon them, you are placing them higher or lower than yourself. This notion, at its very fundamental, is what I believe to be a negative thing. In the end we all live and die and nothing separates us from one another in this fact. The only thing that drives us apart from each other, is our opinions of one another. The only reason you would pass judgement upon a person who resorts to a nature that you disagree with, is because your life has dictated their actions as wrong. Is it so?
